It's been almost two decades since the release of "Spy Kids, and it's not been fun to watch director Robert Rodriguez run the bubblegum appeal of the original film into the ground, churning out increasingly disappointing sequels. Screenwriter Sarah Rothschild has the idea to semi-revive the concept with "The Sleepover, and while the feature doesn't oversee the spy-ening of spunky kids, it does follow the general idea of children getting to know the secret life of parents. Director Trish Sie isn't the most visionary talent for this type of entertainment, but she handles the escapism adequately, overseeing a lighthearted adventure across Boston as a collection of little ones sample dangers once reserved for adults. "The Sleepover" doesn't have a special snap, but it offers an amusing ride for family audiences.
In suburban Massachusetts, Margot (Malin Akerman) is a lunchroom volunteer married to Ron (Ken Marino) a pastry chef, taking care of their kids, Kevin (Maxwell Simkins) and Clancy (Sadie Stanley. Settling in for a peaceful sleepover night with Kevin's pal, Lewis (Lucas Jaye) and Clancy's friend, Mim (Cree Cicchino) the family's plans are interrupted by the arrival of secret smugglers hunting for the Crown of Duramuran. Exposing Margot's past life as a top thief, the intruders take her hostage, reuniting her with ex-flame and old partner, Leo (Joe Manganiello) demanding the pair execute a new plan to lift the crown. Realizing their parents are gone, the children elect to follow clues and hope to locate their guardians before real danger arrives, setting out to navigate Boston locations as they get closer to their goal.
Before the hunt begins, The Sleepover" assigns character-building quests for the younger personalities. Kevin is a habitual liar, trying to wow others with tall tales of family and adventure. Clancy is a brilliant cello player who's crushing out on a classmate while dealing with her mother's refusal to gift her a phone. Mim is the BFF who's full of attitude, encouraging Clancy to defy her parents. And Lewis the product of over-protective guardianship, fitted with special underwear to prevent bedwetting. They're the misfits of "The Sleepover, dealing with adolescent issues as they casually disregard parental order, soon thrust into the middle of a problem when a night of backyard camping goes awry. Black-clad villains come to claim Margot, taking Ron as well, leaving the children with nothing but clues and special jewelry to help decode a rescue operation, setting the plot in motion.
Rothschild splits "The Sleepover" into two tales of action, tracking the kids as they're gradually exposed to Margot's secret life, including a trip to her high-tech storage locker, which is filled with spy gadgets, disguises, and a turbo-charged car. Of course, the youngsters have limited knowledge on how to work anything, with Clancy putting her driver's permit to the test as they take the automobile for a spin, while Kevin claims a dangerous pocket laser. They end up in Boston, with most of their screen time devoted to codebreaking inside a library, dress-up (they steal Tea Party museum clothes to replace their wet outfits) and an interaction with Margot's old partner (Karla Souza. The other side of "The Sleepover" concerns Margot and Leo's plans to reclaim the priceless crown, forced to reteam while Ron objects to everything, quickly becoming a liability. Time with the adults doesn't possess much charm, mostly because Sie can't resist turning to Marino for every comedic beat, letting the mild actor go wild with improvisations that often feel endless. This blind search for silliness isn't welcome, with the younger set supplying more laughs as they track Margot's past to her present location.
"The Sleepover" isn't major work, lacking dynamic energy when it comes to stunt work and chases, with the director of "Pitch Perfect 3" and "Step Up All In" not bringing much to the movie besides the basics in flips and greenscreen reaction shots. However, there's entertainment value in watching the children caught up in mischief and rescue operations, and the cast is charming, never pushing too hard with obnoxious behavior. "The Sleepover" doesn't even need adult supervision, as the heist aspects of the tale are ruined by unfunny business and needy performances. The target demographic for the film will likely focus on adolescent shenanigans anyway, and the production is always better off when highlighting the nervous kids and their sudden immersion into a criminal underworld, which creates appealing opportunities for the idiosyncratic bunch to shine.
